What a small business website needs today
The essentials of a small business website: speed on phones, a clear offer, easy contact, trust signals, SEO basics and analytics.

In this article
A small business website does not need to be large or expensive to do its job. It needs to load quickly, explain clearly what you offer and make contact easy. Here is what matters today, in the order a visitor meets it.
Fast, and built for phones first
Many visitors will arrive on a phone, so design for the small screen first. Speed matters as much as looks: compress images, avoid heavy sliders and autoplay video, and choose reliable hosting. Test the site on your phone over mobile data, not office Wi-Fi. Google's free PageSpeed Insights shows what slows a page down.
A clear offer at the top
Within seconds, a visitor should understand what you do, where and what to do next. A headline such as "Family dental practice in Islington, open on Saturdays" says more than a slogan that could fit anyone. Put one clear button next to it, such as "Book a visit" or "Get a quote".
Easy ways to get in touch
People prefer different channels, so offer the main ones and make each work with one tap: a phone number that rings when tapped, a WhatsApp button that opens a chat, and a short form asking only for a name, contact details and a message. Show your opening hours and say when you usually reply.
Trust signals people can check
Visitors look for proof that a real business stands behind the site. Use real photos of your team, premises and work, not stock images. Show reviews with a link to where they were posted, such as your Google profile. Add your registered company name, company number and address in the footer, with a clear privacy policy.
The basics behind the scenes
A few things visitors never see decide whether the site keeps working for you:
- Page titles and descriptions: each page has its own, saying what it offers and where.
- A page for each service, so every search has a clear page to land on.
- Analytics: Google Analytics and Search Console, with calls, WhatsApp clicks and form submissions tracked, so you know what brings enquiries.
- Easy updates: you can change prices, hours and photos yourself, without waiting for a developer.
What to do next
Open your website on your phone and look at it as a new customer would. Is the offer clear at once? Can you get in touch with one tap? Does anything show you are a real business? Note what is missing and start with the most important. If you would like a second opinion, the MB Media House team can review the site with you.
